Bio: Prof. Jie Song is the director of Institute of Cloud Computing Technology. The institute is founded in 2015 as an “upgrade” of the old cloud-computing lab (since 2010). Prof. Song received his doctorate in computer science in July, 2008. After that, he worked in IRIT lab of Paul Sabatier University, France as a postdoctoral researcher. In 2010, he joined Software College at Northeastern University via the “talent program” of the university. He has led and accomplished many academic projects, published more than 30 papers (1st author) in journals and conferences.

Abstract: I will present an overview of research  at the Institute of Cloud Computing in Northeastern University, China. Our research focuses on distributed system and algorithms upon the cloud infrastructure, including big data storage and management, iterative computing and energy efficient computing. We investigate the methodology of storing and querying massive and unstructured or semi-structured data efficiently, such as the optimization on logic and storage data models, query algorithms, NoSQL and NewSQL databases. We have also worked on many aspect of iterative computing, which is a computing paradigm of iterative method which generates a sequence of improving approximate solutions for a class of problems, especially in a parallel and distributed environment. In this area, we design and optimize the distributed programming model, framework and algorithms, especially on special data set such as streaming data and graph data. Our long-term interest is in energy efficiency computing, which is about how to optimize energy consumption performance of software system from aspect of middleware, applications and source code.
