Projects

The aim of the project is to secure the position of Finland as one of the leading research centers focusing on HIP-related work. The focus of this project is two-fold: to move on to deployment and to enhance the existing design and implementation of HIP. The deployment plan consists of piloting HIP with different applications and (Linux and possibly other) platforms and providing the necessary infrastructure and services for initial HIP users. The second goal is to positively influence on the long-term impact of HIP through participation in the IETF, US Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) and Future Internet Network Design activities.

The Trustworthy Internet (TrustInet) research project is studying how the trustworthiness of the Internet can be heightened by adding a slim overlay infrastructure on top of the existing IP networks. The light overlay infrastructure builds a new kind of network layer platform for the services above.
The project will carry out original research in cooperation with an extensive international partner network; create prototype technologies, platforms, and solutions; perform experiments; influence the standardization of the field; and contribute to research education.

The NordicHIP project involves issues in areas of Security and Internet communication services. The public identities provided by HIP are essential to support trust and authentication between hosts. Furthermore, HIP allows for scalable security architectures as the requirement to the support infrastructure are modest; most communications occurs directly between HIP peers. On the communication side, HIP offers good possibilities for co-existence of IPv4 and IPv6 networks by supporting handovers between different IP versions. In this project, we will further investigate discovery of v4/v6 gateways and performance issues of cross-version IP mobility. We believe HIP can be a base for future Mobile Internet by addressing security and performance shortcoming found in the earlier proposals for mobility protocols.  

WISEciti (Wireless Community Services for Mobile Citizens) is a joint research initiative between Arcada, Ericsson Finland, NetHawk, Nokia, Seesta, TeliaSonera Finland, TKK, HIIT, University of Helsinki, and VTT. The project studies various aspects related to the mobility enabling technologies for acquiring insight to the future IP-based mobility solutions and their impact. This includes analyzing the business networks and market structure and their dynamics in the viewpoints of mobility-enabled network architectures and protocols as well as defining methods for modeling and modeling of future, innovative end-user services. In order to provide further insight to applicability of the Host Identity Protocol (HIP) in real networks, the project develops the architecture and components of HIP networking further and implements a globally accessible HIP network infrastructure for piloting mobile, VPN-based Internet access over HIP.
