Collectivity: Supporting collective action and experiencing | Research track at UIx

We investigate how computing and media support group interactions beyond the individual. Focusing on the group-level means advancing the understanding of social computing detailed to the unit of analysis of groups.´The result is an understanding social cognition and experience and its mediation, phenomena around how members think about and experience sociality. Topics include

  • Techniques, platforms, and formats for collective achievements.
  • Common spaces. Making actions visible to selected others.
  • Awareness cues. Real-time sensor information to support companionship, relatedness, expression, and coordination.
  • Collocated and mediated interactions. .

Example: MapLens a mobile AR map provides commond ground in collocated interaction

MapLens: using markerless tracking dynamic information is overlayed on a physical map
(Morrison et al. 2009).
MapLens was used in a pervasive game and compared to a fully digital solution. MapLens supports collaboration facilitating common ground and place making (Morrison et al. 2009)

Example: CoMedia integrates in a mobile application awareness cues in collective media stories

Stories created by a group of visitors of a music festival
(Jacucci et al. 2007)
Contributions of pictures, text,
videos an sounds are enriched by awareness cues
Cues about digital an physical status of members of a story
