NordicHIP project

The NordicHIP project is an excellent  fit of the NORDUNET3 programme [2]. It involves issues in both areas of Security and Internet communication services. The identities provided by HIP are essential to support trust and authentication between hosts. Furthermore, HIP allows for scalable security architectures as the requirement to the support infrastructure are modest; most communication occurs directly between HIP peers. Secure  host and network mobility are the main assets built into the basic HIP protocol.

On the communication side, HIP offers good possibilities for co-existence of IPv4 and IPv6 networks by supporting handovers between different IP versions. In this project, we will further investigate discovery of v4/v6 gateways and performance issues of cross-version IP mobility. We believe HIP can be a base for future Mobile Internet by addressing security and performance shortcoming found in the earlier proposals for mobility protocols. 

Internationally, scientific and innovative contributions can be widely visible. Both HIIT [3] and SICS [4] are widely known for their research on Security and Internet protocols. HIIT [3] has been collaborating, among others, with top research institutions ICSI [5] and UC Berkeley [6], Tsinghua University [7] and IIT Madras [8] on HIP development. The project partners are very active in IETF [9] and IRTF [10] standartization bodies, leading HIP-related working groups.

The project work in NordicHIP will be carried out as an extension of existing international activities, and thus will have a direct impact on the global scientific community.
