My research is on people creating digital media for personal purposes, for friends and family, and for public appeal. I have worked in the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT since 2001. Currently I'm a postdoc researcher and leading the Self-Made Media research group at HIIT. In 2002-03 I was a visiting scholar in the School of Information (iSchool) at the University of California, Berkeley. Currently I'm a Visiting Research Fellow in the Digital World Research Centre in University of Surrey, UK. My doctoral work was on designing metadata for personal media from the users' perspective. The thesis was awarded by the Finnish Information Processing Association, it was also one of the 17 finalists for the ERCIM Cor Baayen Award 2007, and the thesis was one of the two theses from the CS department nominated for the TKK thesis of the year.
