Summer jobs in IT research institutions (deadline February 6th 2012)

Summer jobs in computing research are waiting for students. Several salaried research assistant positions are available in a range of research projects.

There are jobs available for computer science and information technology students. In some projects there are also jobs available for students of industrial engineering, mathematics, bioinformatics, psychology, social psychology, communications and law.

The research assistants are needed from May to September. Contracts can also be made for a shorter period.

Successful applicants are required to have Bachelor’s degree or gained around 150 credits from their studies – on the Bachelor level - to be interested in research work and to be active in contributing to the projects.

Tule kesätöihin tutkimuslaitoksiin (hakuaika 6.2.2012 asti)

Tietotekniikan tutkimuksen kesätyöpaikat odottavat opiskelijoita. Tarjolla on useita palkallisia kesätyöpaikkoja tutkimusavustajina erilaisissa tutkimusprojekteissa.

Töitä on tarjolla tietojenkäsittelytieteen ja tietotekniikan opiskelijoille. Joissakin hankkeissa tarjolla on töitä mm. tuotantotalouden, matematiikan, bioinformatiikan, psykologian, sosiologian, sosiaalipsykologian, viestinnän ja oikeustieteen opiskelijoille.

Työt kestävät toukokuusta syyskuuhun tai sopimuksen mukaan lyhyemmän ajan. Työpaikat sijaitsevat eri paikoissa Kumpulassa ja Otaniemessä. Palkka maksetaan sopimuksen mukaan.

Call for postdoctoral researchers at HIIT (deadline 13 May 2011)

Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT conducts basic and strategic research on information technology. It is a joint research
institute of the Aalto University and the University of Helsinki. HIIT is a leading IT institute with research ranging from fundamental
methods and technologies to novel applications and their impact on other sciences, people and society. HIIT's key competences are in
analysis of large sets of data, probabilistic modeling of complex phenomena, Internet architecture and technologies, mobile and
human-centric computing, and user-created media.

HIIT now calls for applications for postdoctoral researchers. The positions will be filled for three years maximum, starting 1 August
2011, or as agreed.

The postdoctoral researchers will undertake research work, teaching and student supervision in some of HIIT's research areas, but
preferably providing an extension to the competences presently available in HIIT. Each postdoc will belong to one or more HIIT
research groups, and be mentored by one or more group leaders / PI's. See www.hiit.fi/research

This time, we are searching for postdocs for the following fields: 
 * We are launching a new focus area for which we are looking for people in particular working in large-scale computational and
  probabilistic modelling, with applications in Text analysis and recommendations, Context-awareness and user modeling, or Biological
  data integration, modelling, and bioinformatics. People involved include: Antti Oulasvirta and Antti Honkela (contact persons;

The applications should include:
        - A research statement, including preferences on HIIT groups and topics, and  outlining proposed research (at most 3 pages)
        - Curriculum vitae
        - List of publications with links to pdf-versions of the three most relevant publications
        - Degree certificate of the PhD degree. In case the doctoral degree is still pending, an up-to-date study transcript and a
          plan for completion of the degree should be provided. The doctoral degree should be completed during 2011. 
        - Two letters of reference, or email addresses of two senior academics willing to provide more information.

The salary for beginning postdoctoral researchers is usually about 3000-3600 euro / month, and for more experienced researchers up to
about 4300 euro / month. The contract includes occupational health and social security benefits.

Googlen kesäkoodikampanja rantautuu nyt myös Aallon kampukselle. Tietotekniikan tutkimuslaitos HIIT toimii mentorina kymmenessä open source projektissa. Hi,

We are glad to inform that Helsinki Institute for Information Techonology is accepted as a mentoring organization for Google Summer of Code 2011(GSoC). For those who are not aware of GSoC; GSoC is a global program that offers
student developers stipends to write code for various open source software projects. They have worked with several open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund several projects over a three month period.

As a mentoring organization HIIT suggests 10 projects for students. You can find more information about these projects from our ideas page http://wiki.hiit.fi/display/gsoc2011/GSOC+2011+Idea+page.

If you are interested in any of these projects please contact the mentors. All the required details are given in our ideas page.

This is a great opportunity for students to get them selves exposed to real-world software development scenarios and gain recognition in the open-source community. You will also receive a salary of 5000$ and certificate from Google at the end of the program in recognition of your contribution to GSoC.

Research Intern – Multimodal Interactive Systems

The Interactive Systems Group (University of Helsinki/HIIT) is looking for a talented intern to work within our group. Our current research focuses on novel interaction techniques, mobile interaction, multi-touch displays and crossmodal feedback through the audio and haptic modalities. The successful applicant will contribute to a research project investigating the use of mobile crossmodal interaction and interpersonal communication. The intern will be required to complete some hardware development, design and code a mobile application and assist in the users trials of the system.

The internship will take place in Helsinki from April to August (with the possibility of extending this to 6 months).

Requirements:

• Applicants must be studying towards a Masters or PhD in computing science, electrical engineering or interactive system design.

• Experience in interactive systems, embedded systems and sensors, HCI, and developing applications for Nokia devices would be beneficial

• Fluent spoken and written English is essential

Researcher position on security and performance of network protocols and distributed systems

A researcher/PhD student position is open in the Networking research group at HIIT focusing on security and performance of network protocols and distributed systems. http://www.hiit.fi/networking-research
Particular topics of interest include p2psip, botnet detection, hierarchical distributed hash tables, sensor networking.
