NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS
Upon returning to HIIT from my recent internship at Microsoft Research's Social Media Collective in Cambridge, Massachusetts, I am writing up my PhD dissertation on practices of balancing privacy and publicness in the context of social network services. Next to Operation Finish Line, my research endeavors are focused on local online gift exchange, especially questions of negotiating reciprocity and indebtedness.
In February 2013, I will be co-organized a workshop on Measuring Networked Privacy at CSCW 2013 along with Xinru Page, Karen Tang, and Fred Stutzman. Further conferences I will be attending this spring include Sosiologipäivät and CHI 2013.
I blog sporadically at Social Media Collective's research blog and at Rajapinta (in Finnish). For more frequent updates, you can find me on Twitter (airi_).
RESEARCH
My PhD research focuses on the balancing practices of balancing privacy and publicness in social network services. I am interested in privacy, publicness, identities, and self-presentation. My advisors are Antti Oulasvirta, Coye Cheshire, Anna-Maija Pirttilä-Backman.
While social media is all about sharing with a community, few people wish to share everything, with everyone, all the time. My research investigates the strategies users of social network services adopt to cope with the challenges networked publics as a context pose to them. I am interested in how a balance with privacy and publicness is found under circumstances characterized by SNS users' mutual dependence and how this balancing is related to identity and self-presentation. In my work, I aim at understanding SNS users' practices for managing the privacy and publicness of both themselves and others.
Further research interests include a range of privacy issues, generalized exchange in local online systems as well as the connections between online and offline aspects of communities.
