Fundamental limits of bursty multi-user communications


The future Internet of Things will lead to "bursty but massive" distributed transmissions. The classical tools used for the performance evaluation of cellular networks based on information theory in the asymptotic regime are not appropriate for this new paradigm. Starting from a general model in the asymptotic regime for dense networks, we adapt the model with three important constraints that are necessary to represent bursty and massive communications. we then derive fundamental tradeoffs between spectral efficiency, energy efficiency, reliability and latency.
