Doctoral Education

HIIT coordinates the Helsinki Doctoral Education Network in Information and Communications Technology (HICT). HICT is hosted jointly by Aalto University and University of Helsinki, the two leading universities within the ICT field in Finland. The network serves as a collaboration platform for doctoral education combining all the relevant subfields of computer science and information technology at Aalto University and the University of Helsinki. It involves at present over 60 professors and almost 250 doctoral students, and the participating units produce altogether more than 40 new doctors each year.

HICT organises two open calls for doctoral student positions each year. In 2018, the calls received again a lot of international interest. Spring call attracted 166 applications and the Autumn call 194 applications.

An important activity of HICT is to provide courses and training that support the development and career goals of the doctoral students. In spring 2018, HICT organised a workshop on poster presentation skills. In addition, HICT organised a training session on pitching and presentation skills in October 2018. Both of the workshops included tasks that the students completed together with two teachers from Kaskas Media.

HICT organised also three informal get-together events for doctoral students in 2018: Spring get-together event in April, HICT Summer Pizza Party in June and Pitch & Pizza competition event in November. The idea of the Pitch & Pizza event was that the doctoral students had the opportunity to practice their pitching skills and finally the three best pitch talks were rewarded with SLUSH tickets. HICT students and supervisors were also involved in many other events at Aalto University and University of Helsinki. For example, HICT was visible at the Computer Science Research Day event in October 2018, where HICT doctoral students, among other researchers, presented their work to each other.
