Guanyu Hu

Guanyu Hu is a HIIT Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Aalto University and is affiliated with ELLIS Institute Finland, working with Professors Guoying Zhao and Juho Kannala. He received his PhD from Xi’an Jiaotong University. Before joining Aalto, he spent three years at Queen Mary University of London, working as a Research Associate.

His research examines the mechanisms and limits of AI’s understanding of human affect and behaviour. Bringing together psychological theory and mathematical optimisation, he investigates how models form representations of human behaviour, how these representations shape their judgements, and why errors and biases vary across people and contexts. His work translates these insights into interpretable and fair learning methods, with the broader goal of advancing human-centred and trustworthy AI that can reliably understand human behaviour across diverse social contexts.
