ELLIS Unit Helsinki expands its base and grows its activities

A new twin unit in Manchester will open up opportunities for collaboration and exchange.

For AI researchers looking to broaden their international connections, new opportunities are up for grabs.

ELLIS (the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems) is a network of excellence that brings together top AI researchers, with the goal that the best basic research is done in Europe. It has units across Europe, one of which is situated in Finland and hosted by FCAI.

The Helsinki unit is now broadening its scope of activities. Unit director Samuel Kaski hopes that researchers in the field of AI join ELLIS activities and become members.

“I encourage all qualified FCAI people to apply to become ELLIS members”, says Kaski, who is also the director of FCAI.

“An alternative, and even easier, way to get involved is to become an ELLIS supporter.”

ELLIS membership can be gained by researchers who regularly publish at top tier venues in machine learning driven fields. The application process is explained here. To become a supporter, on the other hand, only signing up is needed.

The ELLIS Unit Helsinki focuses particularly on probabilistic modeling and Bayesian inference, simulator-based inference, data-efficient deep learning, privacy-preserving machine learning and interactive artificial intelligence. It also coordinates the ELISE project which brings together top European hubs in advancement of the ELLIS mission.

Besides enlarging contributions to ELLIS research programs and co-organizing events with FCAI, the operations of the ELLIS Unit Helsinki are also being strengthened by a new strategic partnership with the recently established ELLIS Unit in Manchester. Tight collaboration with the twin unit is already under way through joint research and exchange. These will also be opened up to the rest of the ELLIS network.
