Abstract: Since the last few decades, the amount of environmental data has increased rapidly. Thanks to scientific activities such as continuous ground measurements, satellite remote sensing, laboratory and field experiments, and computer simulations that help understanding the roots and causes of environmental problems. However effective and efficient analysis of the environmental big data yet has remained a big challenge. In addition, the advances on environmental sensing and computing using low-cost sensors contribute to environmental measurements (e.g., air pollution) and also further scientific exploration. Indeed, low-cost sensors are portable, affordable, low-power and easy to install. To this end, these sensors can be deployed massively in fields and enable the generation of high resolution spatio-temporal environmental information, however at the price of low sensing accuracy and lower reliability. This public lecture presents how Artificial intelligence (AI) and data mining methods are beneficial to (i) enhance environmental big data analysis and (ii) to improve the environmental sensing performance of low-cost sensors and their capabilities. The lecture presents several case studies in the fields of atmospheric sciences and air quality research, and also will discuss some potential engineering applications which can be developed using AI-based sensing and computing.
