  • A unique programming course for the D-Wave quantum computer makes use of refrigeration technology developed at Aalto University. While researchers around the world debate whether quantum computer sold by Canadian D-Wave Systems is an actual quantum computer or not, you can soon study the fundamentals and programming of these devices in Finland. The workshop at the IT Center for Science (CSC) in October 2016 will be delivered by D-Wave Systems, currently the only company in the world selling...
  • Semantic matching algorithm can be utilized to find related documents in a wide range of applications. The challenge of TekesHack Design Contest was to combine open data, machine learning and artificial intelligence in order to create a whole new service solution and to demonstrate efficient ways to match companies, research teams and investors. ”This is the first time when hackathon is combined with a public procurement  in Finland”, says Procurement Manager Eriika Autio from Tekes. The...
  • The students will familiarise themselves with the most recent innovations at the company’s headquarters. Olli Rauramo, Susanna Nevalainen and Krista Naumanen from Aalto University have been selected to Huawei’s international Seeds for the Future programme for higher education institutions together with seven other students representing five different universities in Finland.  When the students were selected, the motivation for the field and the programme demonstrated by the applicants in their...
  • The recent video of the spinoff from the gaming research lab has gathered unrivaled popularity in the social media. Augmented Climbing Wall is a spinoff from Aalto University Department of Computer Science and it offers augmented reality tools for climbers to improve their climbing skills through gamified exercises. Augmented Climbing Wall has developed the first gaming platform for climbing walls. The newest game is called Climball, an interactive game with two players and a virtual ball....
  • HIIT scientists Michael Gutmann and Corander published a machine learning based ABC inference approach in the Journal of Machine Learning Research. Their method (BOLFI) is based on Bayesian optimization with Gaussian processes and is generally applicable to simulator models with intractable likelihoods. Without sacrificing accuracy, BOLFI speeds up posterior computation by 3-4 orders of magnitude compared with the state-of-the-art sequential Monte Carlo algorithms. It is expected to become a...
  • 10th International Workshop on Machine Learning in Systems Biology September 3-4 2016, World Forum, The Hague The tenth edition of MLSB was organized as a two-day satellite meeting before ECCB2016, the European Conference on Computational Biology (September 5-7, 2016) by Dick de Ridder and Aalt-Jan van Dijk (Wageningen University, The Netherlands) and Juho Rousu and Harri Lähdesmäki (Aalto University, Finland) at the...
  • A HIIT-wide team led by professor Jukka Corander included several scientists from both UH and Aalto with a joint mission to create the most advanced and computationally best scalable method for genome-wide association (GWAS) studies in bacteria. The team had a close collaboration with the Pathogen Genomics Group at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute where GWAS is an important step towards unraveling the secrets behind evolution and success of numerous major human pathogens from large-scale...
