The Fine Line Between Ambition and Feasibility: Tips for Writing ERC Project Proposals

Abstract:

In this talk, I will outline my experience of how ERC panels look at an ERC grant. I will address questions such as: What do panelists typically look for in the candidate? What do they look for in the project vision? What do they expect in the research approach? I will emphasize the imperative of balancing research ambition and project feasibility, which is arguably the most delicate tradeoff that ERC project proposers need to strike. I will also discuss how a typical ERC grant looks like section-by-section and explain how panel members generally read each of these sections.

Bio:

Marlon Dumas is Professor of Information Systems at University of Tartu. He is chair of the Starting Grants panel for Computer Science and Informatics (2018) at the European Research Council. In the past, he has been faculty member at Queensland University of Technology, Australia and Visiting Researcher at SAP Research, Australia. His research interests span across the fields of software engineering, information systems and business process management. His ongoing work focuses on combining data mining and formal methods for analysis and monitoring of business processes. He has published extensively in conferences and journals across the fields of software engineering and information systems. He is co-inventor of seven granted US/EU patents and co-author of the textbook “Fundamentals of Business Process Management”, which is used in over 200 universities worldwide.
